Parte da Bruxelles la campagna per l’Anno europeo 2011, dedicato al volontariato. Sotto lo slogan “Volontari! Facciamo la differenza!”, la Commissione europea ha presentato le molteplici iniziative previste che prendono il via già oggi e metteranno in luce il lavoro ormai indispensabile dei 100 milioni di volontari attivi in Europa. Da un'indagine Eurobarometro del maggio 2010 risulta che 3 europei su 10 dichiarano di essere impegnati nel volontariato: un’attività che produce vantaggi per l’intera società e i singoli. Il volontariato permette infatti di acquisire conoscenze, mettere a frutto le proprie capacità e ampliare le proprie reti sociali, portando spesso a nuove opportunità di lavoro sociale.
Si stima che il volontariato contribuisca al prodotto interno lordo per un 3-5%. Inoltre, un recente studio ha dimostrato che per ogni euro speso per sostenere l'attività dei volontari le organizzazioni hanno ricavato un rendimento medio compreso tra tre e otto euro. Nella sola Italia ci sono 3 milioni di volontari e oltre 30mila organizzazioni non profit, per un totale di 700mila addetti. La Commissione incentiverà anche la costituzione di nuove reti di organizzazioni per favorire gli scambi transfrontalieri e le sinergie tra le organizzazioni di volontariato e altri settori, come ad esempio le imprese.
Nel corso del 2011 saranno anche promossi centinaia di eventi, attività, progetti, sia a livello nazionale che comunitario.
